I'm obsessing culottes... Inspiration

Sunday 30 November 2014

I completely blame Kirsty and Debbie for this and I think I might have to eat my words and a little humble pie. You see they have both made awesome culottes recently and whilst I love them on those ladies, I was convinced they'd be hideous on me. I announced they'd never get me into culottes, no way, no how. Then I saw these babies from Gorman...

...and I thought now there's a pair that might completely sway me. Then I went to Gorman and tried them on and now I'm a goner. I hope I'm not completely deluded, and they don't in fact make me look like an Oompa Loompa.

That said, I bought this amazing cotton/linen (85/15, I think) fabric and I'm committed.

Then Myra of MyZeeMoo very rightly warned me on Instagram: that print is gonna make for some potentially awful pattern placement faux pas. Oh lord, I'm not sure I can avoid it...

But I neeeeeeeeed culottes.

Are you falling head over heels for the culotte trend or are you happily avoiding it?

  2. Please tell me you are going to get those Gorman lovelies - hawt!! I haven't embraced the culottes trend yet but am open to it. As for pattern placement, maybe just don't avoid it, I mean Gorman plastered lobsters all over bikini bottoms - one very prominently placed in a very delicate place ;-) http://www.gormanshop.com.au/accessories/swimwear/lobster-high-bikini-bottom.html

  3. I have such fond memories of them in their previous incarnations, in all forms, even the skort that I wore to work, that I've no doubt that I'll join you all before summer's out... Then again, I saw a lady rocking a woollen pair with boots in town a few months back, she looked fabulous...

  4. I know Sarah, I was soooo with you. I was very surprised when I tried some on and they looked good. I'm hoping the mirrors in Gorman weren't those ones that make you look super-skinny!

  5. Bwahahahaha! Lobsters indeed! I didn't get the culottes - they came with a very steep price tag. And that's why I makes things. Save some money and get a perfect fit (with any hope and luck). This is a bit of experimentation - I'm hoping they turn out how I envisage, and not make me regret the investment

  6. See that's the thing MaciNic - I don't have find memories! Let's hope this just makes me a bit more adventurous and not a foolish follower of trends :)

  7. Agree Debbies, Kirstys and those Gorman ones! are fabulous but Ive been like you, convinced they aren't for me. Look forward to seeing yours, your fabric is perfect.

  8. Oh that Myra! As I said on instagram, I am currently stalled with a pair that have placement issues, so I feel your pain. Regardless of the fabric, you must make a pair of culottes! Mandatory!

  9. P.S. Gorman really make me annoyed that I sew. I just want to buy all their stuff!

  10. I just can't seem to get on board with the culottes trend. I blame them being a part of both my Brownies uniform and my Bakers Delight uniform when I was younger. They didn't suit me then and I doubt they'll suit me now.

  11. I have a lovely silk remnant with what seems like unavoidable pattern placement issues. It's just been stashed until I can decide what to do. Good luck. I have faith in you. Enjoy the culottes ride.

  12. Gorgeous fabric. I wouldn't worry about the placement. Culotte crotches drop low anyway, and they are looser fitting than say, a pair of skinnies, in which case the placement could be ahem interesting. Besides, the print is all over the pants so you'd get dizzy trying to stare at your crotch to work out if you've placed it right. They will look amazing! I love those Gorman ones too. I'm bored with winter dark colours already....now you're making me want summer to arrive already so that I can make some silk and linen culottes in bright bright brights!!!

  13. Aren't they great? Here's hoping they end up looking as good on me!

  14. Yep, I'm gonna muslin them first as I I'm thinking the fit might need some jiggling. It might be a while till they appear!

  15. I know! But their prices are way out of my range, so I'm still best just to imitate (flattery and all that!)

  16. I hear you! I was completely anti. I don't have fond memories at all, and I'm hoping the mirrors didn't deceive me. Fingers crossed!

  17. Isn't that a pain? Hopefully you'll find a use for yours soon!

  18. The fabric is divine, Debbie. The softest, most beautiful cotton linen blend. I just want to wrap myself in it! I am going to muslin my culottes first as the crotch depth is not measuring up for me. Might need to drop it to get the look I'm going for. They're a little way off, but they're coming!

  21. the fabric is gorgeous the shape is gorgeous and I'm with Debbie regarding pattern placement - if it works for a skirt works for culottes - you must make them! Have you already decided on the pattern?
