SEWN: NOT QUITE CAKE

Monday 4 May 2015

I think we are all aware of my predilection for icing/frosting. Cake is really just the vehicle to deliver the good stuff in my opinion.

But recently I found myself making what I considered cake. A top that could be worn in more than one outfit combo, with a variety of coordinating pieces.

Meet Peplum 2 or Not Quite Cake.

You see, this cake has icing that's perhaps not immediately obvious. She's a bit more dramatically shaped than The Phoenix.

A bit more pep and puff.

And she has a somewhat hidden quality that's not obvious from far away.

A type of floral burnout/embroidered gorgeousness. Is there a name for this type of fabric? It's a cotton viscose blend I purchased from My Hung Fabrics and stashed at the end of last year. I had it in mind for a top of some sort and after making The Phoenix I decided it would be perfect to create a lightly iced cake.

There's not much to be said about this make. I used my heavily altered peplum top pattern and it all went swimmingly.

I have to say I'm still not convinced about me wearing black. I feel it looks a bit hard against my fair skin and perhaps there is a better neutral for me. But I've worn it already and I did enjoy it. Not quite a woohoo, but certainly not a meh (insert shoulder shrug here).

  1. I just loooooove this top! Well done! I've been browsing the Stylish dress books today to see which pattern I can modify to make me a version - definitely a queue jumper. Now I'm dreaming of fabrics. I'm thinking of cake too - Just a simple colour but with some texture. This looks like a great winter staple that's comfy but has a bit of ooh la la.

  3. Check you and your multi purpose finished garment sewing out! That fabric is relish and is a great way to sass up a simple silhouette :D

  4. I like frosting and I like cake ... I like it all just gimme that sugar! This silhouette is perfect on you and I like how you look in black - it might not be a bam! in your face colour but that devorè in a bright colour would have looked cheap and in a light colour, bridal - in black looks rich and it's perfect for a day to night look.

  5. I wear a lot of black too, as a mighty pale person it can sometimes look a bit harsh but that's where scarves, jewellery etc are my saviours. I think it looks super on you either way. It's such a lovely fabric - can you wear another colour underneath to change the tone of the black at all?

  6. Oh, that fabric... I have no idea what it's called but it sure is lovely! How cool that you got to use your peplum pattern again!

  8. Nawww thanks Kate! I've just had a flick and Pattern H from Stylish Dress Book (STB): Simply Smocks, Dresses and Tops, as well as Pattern Q from STB: Clothing for Everyday Wear might be modifiable pretty easily. Pattern H has a slight bell sleeve you could trim down and a good basic bodice (just chop at the length you want the bodice and add a gathered peplum) and Pattern Qhas a short sleeve you could simply lengthen. Both have a front neckline slit, but that could easily be omitted (that's what I did). Can't wait to see what you come up with!

  9. Thanks Christy! Ah yes, my lovely green shoes. About 4-5 years old (or more) from Mimco. Love a quirky Mimco shoe.

  11. Sugar!!!!! And I knew my uber stylish Italian friend would know the name of this fabric. Of course it's devorè ;) I agree with the colour selection being the best for this fabric, but it's a particularly hard black (undertones of grey) and it does wash me out. Nothing that a slick of red lipstick doesn't fix xxx

  12. I only wear black as an underlayer (think neutral tank top under cardigans etc), but I'm never confident with accessories like scarves and I'm not a fan of things around my neck (weird, I know). Jewellery always feels too dressy on me (weird again, I know). But I do like the idea of wearing another colour underneath. I had a black tank on for the photos, but a different colour could look really cool! Thank you!

  13. Thanks Debbie. And I'm not sure about "pretty face" - "pasty skin" might be a better description! But it is a great easy piece for wearing in the colder months :)

  14. It's devorè! Sasha below had the answer. And yes, it was indeed satisfying to use the pattern again after all that hard alteration work!

  16. What a gorgeous top! and looks beautiful on you. This is the kind of top I would wear to the ground. The fabric is gorgeous too. It's a bit hard to see the lovely texture in that dappled light in your picture, but so lovely in your close-up :)

  17. Thank you Carolyn! What a mess these photos were. I was well aware of the dappled light, but this was my window to get photos done and I just could not find well lit shade! I was cringing myself :)
